D.C. Gambling Initiative Gets Green Light29 June 2004WASHINGTON, D.C. – As reported by the Associated Press: "A judge ruled Tuesday that supporters of a proposed casino may collect petition signatures to place an initiative on the November 2 general election ballot. "One day after hearing arguments on the case, District of Columbia Superior Court Judge James Boasberg ruled in favor of supporters of the Capital Horizons project. Boasberg's decision allows them to begin collecting more than 17,000 verifiable signatures of registered D.C. voters required to place an initiative before the voters. They have until July 6 to gather the signatures. "…Unlike a typical Las Vegas casino, the one planned for Northeast Washington would not have traditional slot machines or table games. Instead, it would contain about 3,500 video lottery terminals which would be tied into a computer system run by the D.C. Lottery. "…The $510 million project would include a hotel and casino, stores and restaurants…" |
