Culinary Union Petition Comes Up Short2 August 2006RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "The Culinary Union failed to gather enough valid signatures of Reno voters for a ballot question that, if successful, would have required a public vote on new casinos outside traditional gaming areas, targeting in particular the Station casino recently approved in the South Meadows. "While petitioners turned in more than 17,683 signatures, the Washoe County registrar of voters office challenged 7,068, 40 percent, after a review lasting several weeks was finished Monday night. Most of those rejected were not registered voters or were voters who live outside the city. "Officials said that left 10,615 valid signatures, 1,046 signatures short of the 11,661 required for the question to qualify for the Nov. 7 ballot…" |
