Crown Casino's lustre lost

8 May 2008

USTRALIA -- As reported by the Australia Herald Sun: "Jeff Kennett has given Crown casino a dressing down. Mr Kennett says the casino's high-roller rooms are far different from those he opened as premier in 1997.

"'When the Mahogany Room opened up . . . it was a very special place with high standards and dress standards,' he said. 'In recent times that has changed and that's probably to get the patronage up.'

"But casino chiefs yesterday rejected Mr Kennett's comments.

"'Of course, style and fashion may change over the years -- and I think Jeff's hairstyle is on the Australian heritage list,' spokesman Gary O'Neil said. 'I mean it was a hairstyle that was extremely popular in the 1930s.'

"...Casino sources revealed Mr Kennett personally raised his concerns with Mahogany Room chief Matthew Christie over lunch at the Capital golf course earlier this year.

"...A Mahogany Room regular said Mr Kennett was not the only influential figure to complain about falling standards."
