Croupier School to Open in UK

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Guardian: "The Blackpool Gazette won £200; the Guardian lost its shirt.

"`Everyone loses,' smiled Maggie Dollin-Evans consolingly as this newspaper's green chips went down and then headed straight for the bank.

"Yesterday Ms Dollin-Evans launched what must be the first further education course for croupiers. It will run from next year at Blackpool and Fylde college, in the town that is the closest Britain gets to Las Vegas.

"Blackpool hopes that five casino hotels, one with a Lancastrian take on an Egyptian theme, will soon rise on the golden mile. The first could be open in three years, and Ms Dollin-Evans, head of the college's school of tourism, wants to make sure some of the predicted 14,000 local jobs will go to local people.

"…The college has two tables for poker, two for blackjack and four for roulette, in what it calls a special gaming laboratory but which the rest of us might describe as a standard classroom. Fiddling and cheating are not on the syllabus, and staff claim, with sincere looks, that the fall of the roulette ball is random…"
