Critics: New Missouri Casino Will Drain Economy

ST. LOUIS, Missouri – As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "A new casino in the Lemay area will spread bankruptcies, suicide and property crime to even more of the St. Louis area, casino opponents said Tuesday.

"Earl L. Grinols, a professor of economics at Baylor University, said another casino in the region could actually reduce the economic base of St. Louis because people would be spending money there that they would have spent at local businesses.

"…The hearing was exclusively for opponents of the Lemay casino proposal. The council is having more public hearings this week and next week, and may vote as soon as May 18 on whether to approve Pinnacle's offer to build a $300 million casino in Lemay.

"Much of the time was taken by Casino Watch, a Chesterfield-based organization that opposes the spread of legalized gambling. It asked Grinols to appear.

"…Other opponents noted that Pinnacle was highly leveraged and unprofitable…"
