Critics Decry Pennsylvania Gaming Law Loopholes21 August 2006HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Associated Press: "Lobbyists and lawyers hired to represent the groups vying for slot-machine parlor licenses have made more than $750,000 in political contributions this year in Pennsylvania. "The contributions came during the same five-month stretch that the Legislature was considering potentially landscape-altering changes to the state's slot-machine gambling law. "Since applying for licenses last year, the would-be slots-parlor owners, as well as future parlor owners, were barred from making political contributions under a provision in Pennsylvania's slot-machine law that sought to curb the political influence of the gambling industry. "But with money from the lobbyists and lawyers pouring into campaign coffers, some lawmakers say new restrictions are urgently needed to close what they say is a loophole in the law…" |
