Critics, Casino Debate Over Work Conditions

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "Coachella Valley residents and workers Tuesday returned to Sacramento to criticize working conditions at the Agua Caliente and Spa Resort casinos and to threaten the tribe's gambling initiative if it goes to the ballot.

"State and local religious, legal and political leaders said their goal was to ensure that casino workers for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of Palm Springs have an opportunity to engage in collective bargaining.

"…Speakers said they came to impress Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger with their story as he renegotiates state-tribal gambling agreements with the Agua Caliente and other tribes.

"…The Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union largely funded Tuesday's meeting.

"…Agua Caliente Chairman Richard Milanovich acknowledged that the casinos sometimes have employment problems.

"But he criticized the union for using the most disgruntled workers to make allegations that are difficult to disprove…"
