Critics Blast Des Moines Leaders

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Des Moines city leaders have selfishly pursued gambling to solve a budget crisis and exaggerated the industry's interest in a suburban casino, critics said Thursday.

"Elected officials continued public talks Thursday on how to cash in on casino revenue. The City Council will discuss the issue at a public meeting Monday.

"…Des Moines' entrance into the statewide gambling debate came Wednesday when all seven council members agreed they must be open to the idea of a casino, despite anti-gambling posturing during the mayoral campaign just a few months ago.

"…Mayor Frank Cownie and Councilwoman Christine Hensley campaigned on an opposition to any form of gambling in the city…"
