Crime Boss to Serve Time

BOSTON, Massachusetts – As reported by the (Massachusetts) Herald News: "The leader of a far-reaching local organized crime ring called `The Mello Organization,' will likely serve 20 years in federal prison after he decided to plead guilty Monday to a new superseding indictment charging the crime boss with two counts of racketeering.

"Timothy J. Mello, 47, of Fall River and Dartmouth, had been previously charged with 16 felony charges, many of which have been folded into the new superseding indictment.

"The two counts of racketeering include 12 predicate criminal acts including extortion, money laundering, racketeering conspiracy, illegal gambling, conspiracy to distribute narcotics, collection of illegal debts, marijuana distribution, mail fraud, witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

"…The bearded Mello apparently decided to plead guilty to the new indictment and face the 20-year sentence, instead of gambling with a potential life sentence if found guilty at trial…"
