Cricket Player Dismisses Gambling Rumors

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the UK Evening Standard: "Shane Warne and Cricket Australia today both dismissed a report the leg-spinner was seen in the company of an Indian gambler during Australia's victorious 1999 World Cup campaign in England.

"The 34-year-old described the claims published in Indian magazine 'Outlook', that he and Brian Lara were seen leaving a London pizza restaurant with Ratan Mehta as 'total rubbish'.

"…Warne insisted he had never heard of the man, while Cricket Australia announced they would not be launching an investigation unless concrete evidence arose.

"There are no allegations that either player was involved in match fixing.

"…In 1995, Warne and Mark Waugh were fined by the Australian Cricket Board (now Cricket Australia) for accepting money from an Indian bookmaker known only as 'John' to provide pitch and weather information during a tour of Sri Lanka…"
