CRDA Bets on Boardwalk Revival

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It was an unfortunate oversight.

"Over the past several years, while this resort readied a host of new tourist draws - fine dining, world-class shopping and top-shelf entertainment - a premier Atlantic City feature faded deeper into the background.

"The signs are everywhere: cracked, faded and peeling paint hangs from exterior walls, doorways droop and lean, window sills hide beneath layers of paint and unsightly netting keeps crumbling facade decorations from crashing down.

"…The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, or CRDA, recently submitted to city leaders, casino executives and business owners a book of design standards that addresses the mistakes of the past and encourages a common approach to repairing the damage.

"During a recent meeting with editors and reporters of The Press of Atlantic City, CRDA Executive Director Curtis Bashaw discussed those design guidelines and how a Boardwalk initiative will help pull the city's disparate parts together.

"Business owners, developers and casinos that want to share in the CRDA's $110 million Boardwalk Fund will have to conform to detailed design standards. These promote texture, depth and architectural aesthetics over the boxy, monolithic and exclusionary styles that now pervade the Boardwalk.

"…A broader plan - part of a $320 million construction program that includes the Boardwalk initiative - could see a dedicated rail line from New York to Atlantic City and an in-city tram car or gondola system linking multiple attractions…"
