Cranes Can Stand up to Hurricanes

BILOXI -- As reported by the Mississippi Sun-Herald: "While they look spindly and easy to topple, construction cranes, of which there are at least five on the Coast, are erected to withstand hurricane-force winds.

"Construction cranes at Legacy Oaks and Beau View Towers in Gulfport and the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi survived Hurricane Ivan with ease.

"'Tower cranes are designed just like a big weather vane. You have a gear you put them in that lets them swing free,' said Tom Gonzalez, project supervisor for Roy Anderson Corp. at the Hard Rock Casino site in Biloxi.

"The crane at the Hard Rock site could have survived winds of 160 mph, said Gonzalez.

"...After a short delay for Hurricane Ivan, the Hard Rock Casino has returned to a full construction schedule..."
