Courts Toss Out Pennsylvania Gaming Board Member9 November 2004HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Associated Press: "A Commonwealth Court panel on Monday tossed a former state legislator off the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board but said he could be legally reappointed at the end of the month. "The state constitution prohibits former Rep. Jeffrey W. Coy from taking the $145,000-a-year state job before his term expires Nov. 30, even though he resigned his Franklin County seat two months ago, the three-judge panel said. "The case revolved around the meaning of the first sentence of Article II, Section 6 of the Pennsylvania Constitution, which bars state lawmakers from being named to paid civil offices during the time for which they have been elected. "…The decision may further delay the first meeting of the board that will oversee implementation of slot-machine gambling at up to 14 venues in Pennsylvania that was legalized in July…" |
