Courts to Rule on Iowa Racetrack Tax Case

3 February 2004

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "The Iowa Supreme Court plans to rule today in a high-stakes case involving $112 million in state taxes on racetrack casino slot machines.

"The court is expected to issue its decision at 8:15 a.m., said Rebecca Colton, executive assistant to Chief Justice Louis Lavorato. The action is in response to a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court last June, which unanimously reversed the Iowa Supreme Court's finding that state taxes on racetrack casinos were unconstitutional.

"The case affects Prairie Meadows Racetrack Casino in Altoona, Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino, and Bluffs Run Casino and Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs. All three tracks could receive millions of dollars in state tax refunds if the court rules in their favor…"
