Courts to Decide South Korea's Lottery

28 February 2003

SOUTH KOREA – As reported by the Korea Herald: "A court ruling expected to be made next week is drawing keen public attention as it will decide the fate of `Lotto,' a weekly lottery that has infected the nation with an unprecedented level of jackpot fever since its launch last December.

"Christian and Buddhist groups filed lawsuits to Seoul District Court recently, seeking a court measure to suspend the distribution and vending of lottery tickets.

"…A group of lawyers even brought criminal charges against heads of several government agencies that conjointly issued the Lotto lottery.

"They claimed the lottery has been issued with no legal framework covering its operational methods or the destination of sales profits.

"…Lotto officials complained critics have gone too far by moving to abolish Lotto, saying the lottery can do more good than harm if measures are taken to diminish its side effects."
