Courts Reject California Tribe's Appeal Request

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Ukiah Daily Journal: "The U.S. Supreme Court has turned down the appeal from the Coyote Valley Band of Pomos in its last avenue through which to reject signing a gambling compact with the state.

"The high court refused to look at the case in which the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the tribe's arguments that the state of California was bargaining in bad faith with the tribe over a compact of its own.

"…Federal law enforcement agencies could shut down Shodakai Casino in Redwood Valley if the tribe continues to be without a compact.

"…Tribal spokesman Don Lamb says the tribe is willing to sign a version of the 1999 compact signed by some 60 California tribes under former Governor Gray Davis.

"But the tribe will continue to object to it…"
