Court Rule Indiana Casinos Must Pay Taxes4 October 2004INDIANA – As reported by the Associated Press: "Indiana's riverboat casinos must pay an estimated $200 million in back taxes under a ruling that the state Supreme Court let stand. "The ruling also could cost the 10 casinos collectively up to $50 million more a year in corporate income taxes, according to Mike Smith, executive director of the Indiana Casino Association. "The Indiana Tax Court ruled in April that Aztar Corp., which operates Evansville's riverboat, was not entitled to deduct wagering taxes from its state income tax bill. "…The casinos appealed the April decision. Last week, the state's high court declined to hear the case. Casino attorneys are looking for other ways to fight the tax ruling, but Smith acknowledged that the high court was 'basically our last option.'…" |
