County supervisors consider casino option

PASCAGOULA, Mississippi – As reported by the Mississippi Press: "Doris Miller is ready to let the Mississippi Band of Choctaws build a casino on about 100 acres of land they own along Miss. 57 near Interstate 10, and urged county supervisors Monday to let other residents have their voices heard as well.

"Supervisor John McKay wanted the board to try and set a non-binding referendum or at least request an Attorney General's opinion regarding the county's options.

"After lengthy discussions, supervisors agreed to let board attorney Paula Yancey research what, if anything, can be done. Yancey is expected to report her findings at the board's Feb. 12 meeting.

"Yancey said the only thing she has investigated is whether a non-binding referendum could be held. The answer was 'no.'

"Now, supervisors want her to find out if the issue can be placed on ballots for the general election in November…"
