Councilmen Indicted for Alleged Bribes

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle: "A federal grand jury indicted Colma City Councilman Philip Lum Jr. Tuesday for allegedly taking gifts from the owner of the Lucky Chances Casino and then voting on matters that benefited the cardroom.

"Lum, 53, is accused of accepting multiple first-class and coach airline tickets to the Philippines from 1999 through 2001, failing to report those gifts as required by law, and then voting on permit issues and to establish rules under which cardroom employees could gamble, according to the indictment.

"The indictment, the result of a three-year investigation, includes charges of conspiracy and mail fraud. Each of the three counts Lum is facing carries potential penalties of from two to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, though sentencing would be made according to federal guidelines…"
