Cosatu Tackles Affliate Head-On Over Gambling Interest30 June 2004SOUTH AFRICA -- As reported by the SABC News: "The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is strongly opposed to a plan in which one of their affiliates have a stake in rolling out limited payout gambling machines in the Western Cape. The trade union federation says the machines will increase social problems. "The licence was awarded to Hosken Consolidated Investments Limited - a company in which the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu) has a significant stake. "...'It's morally wrong that union investment companies should invest in gambling. We're in the process of trying to make sure that all companies in which union funds are invested use that money in socially responsible ways,' Patrick Craven, a Cosatu's spokesperson, said. "Sactwu represents some of the poorest of the country's labour force..." |
