Connecticut Woman Sentenced for Embezzlement10 March 2004STAMFORD, Connecticut – As reported by the Stamford Advocate: "The former city employee who embezzled more than $78,000 from the city and gambled it at casinos will spend the next two years in prison. "State Superior Court Judge Richard Comerford Jr. yesterday chastised Maria Glander for violating the public trust before he imposed a 10-year prison sentence, suspended after she serves two years. "…'Unfortunately for me, I let gambling take hold of my life,' said Glander, who worked for the city for 17 years before she resigned in May. "…An investigation determined that Glander was generating checks for employees after they left their city jobs, cashing the checks and keeping the money for herself. "…Friedman said her gambling addiction was not an excuse for her behavior, but rather an explanation for how her life became a 'complete disaster.' "But Comerford seemed less interested in what she stole than that she continued to receive pension benefits…" |
