Connecticut Tribes Wait for Federal Ruling

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Hartford Courant: "Connecticut, with a pair of flourishing Indian casinos in hand and possibly two more on the way, will learn this week whether additional tribes will earn the chance to try to join the gambling boom.

"The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs will make final rulings today and Tuesday on petitions by the Golden Hill Paugussetts and two factions of a Massachusetts tribe - the Nipmucs and the Nipmucks - requesting federal recognition.

"To many, including Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the recognition process has become a race to capture a backdoor gambling license in lucrative markets such as New England. But to Indian groups, the link between gambling and formal recognition as a tribe is a coarse insult.

"…The Paugussetts and the Nipmucs are bankrolled by investors interested in developing Indian casinos in Connecticut, where the state already allows casino-style gambling at Foxwoods Resort and Mohegan Sun casinos. Massachusetts does not allow casino-style gambling…"
