Connecticut Tribe Gets Casino Offers

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Post: "Eight state towns and cities - including Bridgeport - have indicated to the Schaghticoke Indians they would be willing to host a tribal casino and resort.

"Chief Richard Velky said no decisions have been made regarding a location, and predicted none would be made, until the tribe resolves a pending state appeal of the tribe's recent federal recognition.

"That recognition will empower the Schaghticokes to form a tribal nation and conduct gambling on tribal lands held in trust by the U.S. government. The 273-member tribe currently controls a 400-acre reservation in Kent.

"State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has vowed to appeal the recognition by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. Velky said he expects the appeal process to take 18 to 24 months.

"…Technically, the tribe could build a casino in a community opposed to the idea by claiming territory as ancestral land and invoking a federal annexation procedure. Realistically, tribal leaders are more likely to select a willing host community…"
