Connecticut tribe fights taxes26 January 2007CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "In the latest motion in its lawsuit disputing the town's taxation of leased slot machines, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe refocuses the arguments about whether its original complaint has legs to stand on. "…It says the town is getting ahead of itself by asking the court to determine the merits of the case rather than simply examining the tribe's right to sue. "The tribe filed a complaint last August in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport over the town's taxation of slot machines the tribe rents for its Foxwoods Resort Casino from Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service Co. In a motion filed Monday, the tribe opposes Jan. 3 motions filed by the town and the state seeking to have the case dismissed. "The tribe says the case is plainly about the proper jurisdiction of federal Indian gaming laws and the tribe's claim that the town's taxation of the slot machines interferes with the tribe's status as a sovereign nation…" |
