Connecticut Tribal Casino Backer Continues Support

MILFORD, Connecticut – As reported by the New Haven Register: "The founder of the Subway sandwich chain — with millions already invested in the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation — said Wednesday he would continue to back the tribe as it acquires new land and plans for construction of a casino.

"Frederick A. DeLuca detailed his involvement with the tribe, his views on casinos and the reasons he believes Bridgeport could be the perfect city to host one, during an interview at Subway's world headquarters on Milford's Bic Drive.

"…Specifically, DeLuca said, Steel Point, formerly the Carpenter Steel site, could be a suitable site for a casino.

"…Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi has said the city would consider playing host to a casino for the Schaghticokes.

"…DeLuca said he lent the Schaghitcokes millions in private money — not that of privately held Subway — to finance the federal recognition effort after Tribal Nation Chief Richard Velky assured him Bridgeport would receive top priority for casino development. DeLuca did not specify exactly how much he lent the tribe…"
