Connecticut Towns May Receive Larger Casino Revenue Share

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Hartford Day: "A group of local lawmakers trying to bring more state casino revenue to southeastern Connecticut heard what they hoped to hear Monday morning in a meeting with House Speaker James Amann, D-Milford, and the new chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee.

"…That news bodes well for efforts by the region's legislators to ensure the cities and towns near Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun receive a larger share of the more than $400 million the two casinos will pour into the state this year, whether through so-called "impact aid" payments or a wholesale restructuring of the state's grant formula.

"The bipartisan group of state representatives met with Amann and Rep. Denise Merrill, D-Mansfield, to discuss proposed bills and elicit promises from the Democratic leaders that $250,000 apiece for five local towns would be preserved as the legislature crafts an answer to Gov. M. Jodi Rell's proposed $31.2 billion two-year budget.

"It appeared that they were successful: Amann said impact aid for the towns of Ledyard, Montville, Preston, Norwich and North Stonington would be at least as high in the legislature's budget as it is in Rell's proposal…"
