Connecticut Lawmakers Vote to Waive Lottery Deadline

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Now: "Give the kid the money

"That has been the rallying cry since 1997 for supporters of Clarence D. Jackson, the Hamden man who never cashed in his $5.8 million winning lottery ticket because he missed the one-year deadline by three days.

"Some legislators have never given up on the perennial issue, which surfaced yet again Thursday in the state House of Representatives. The result? The House voted 81-64 to give the kid the money.

"But 'the kid' - now 31 - is still a long road away from claiming his prize: The issue was referred back to the legislature's appropriations committee, because no money has been set aside in this year's budget to pay Jackson. And if the committee approves the payment, the matter requires approval by the full House again before heading to the Senate.

"Jackson said Thursday night that he has never given up hope, but that he still plays the lottery in case the legislature turns him down.

"…Lawmakers clashed once again over whether they should bend the rules for one person or if they should stick steadfastly to the one-year lottery deadline…"
