Connecticut Casinos Cater to Asians for Thanksgiving

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "Catering to a predominantly Asian clientele on Thanksgiving Day, then hosting diverse crowds of gamblers over the long holiday weekend, is an annual tradition at Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun.

"The casinos will bus thousands of people of Asian descent from New York and Boston to their facilities for performances by major entertainers.

"'The focus of the Thanksgiving Day marketing is generally centered around the Asian clientele,' said Mitchell Etess, president and chief executive officer of Mohegan Sun. 'In general, the Asian community does not celebrate Thanksgiving in the traditional way, and many of the businesses they operate in are not open.'

"Richie Jen, a singer and actor from Taiwan, will perform his seventh consecutive Thanksgiving concerts at Mohegan Sun Arena at 1 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jen sings in both Cantonese and Mandarin, appealing to a wide Asian audience.

"…The casinos book the early-morning shows so that people who work at restaurants and other businesses will be able to get out of work, catch a Connecticut-bound bus, and arrive in time for the show.

"…Restaurants at both casinos will serve traditional Thanksgiving fare, but the tables offering Pai Gow, baccarat and other Asian tables will likely be a bigger draw. Foxwoods is setting up a buffet for 1,500 with both turkey and traditional Asian foods…"
