Congressman's former campaign manager subpoenaed

15 December 2008

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut -- As reported by the Connecticut Post: "A federal grand jury investigating the disappearance of up to $300,000 from U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays' re-election campaign has subpoenaed the veteran congressman's former campaign manager, Michael Sohn, of Fairfield, the Connecticut Post has learned.

"Sources with knowledge of the probe said the investigation is centering on Sohn's control of campaign funds used to pay vendors and campaign staff.

"The campaign scandal has prompted several state Republicans, none of whom wanted to be identified by name, to believe that Sohn may have used Shays' re-election funds to gamble.

"...Sohn, who left for a delayed honeymoon to the Himalayan country of Bhutan on Dec. 4 and isn't due back until Dec. 26, did not return a request for comment Friday..."

"...Prior to Sohn's June 1 wedding, Sohn and a group of friends flew to Las Vegas for a three-day bachelor party.

"Bhutan, a monarchy of about 2.3 million people nestled in high mountains between India on the west and China on the north, is an international destination for gambling.

"...(Sohn's sister) said her brother doesn't have a gambling problem.

"'Maybe he's been to the [Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun] casinos once or twice, but always for fun,' she said. 'He's not a gambler; not a big gambler...'"
