Confusion over Kansas tribal casino bid

COLUMBUS, Kansas -- As reported by the Joplin Globe: "Cherokee County Commissioners on Monday said officials with the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma told them they are no longer considering applying with the state of Kansas to operate a state-owned casino in the county.

"Sean Harrison, a spokesman for the tribe, said Monday afternoon that if anyone told the county commissioners that, they were incorrect.

"...Commissioner Rodney Edmondson said the members of the delegation were clear about what they were saying. He said he didn't know for certain that they were making the statement on behalf of the tribe since they were at the meeting to discuss road improvements.

"...The Cherokee County Commission on Monday, July 23, will endorse a proposal for a state-owned casino in the county.

"...The Quapaw Tribe plans to invest $200 million in a casino and hotel where Kansas, Oklahoma and Kansas meet off Interstate 44. The proposed casino would have a 70,000-square-foot gaming floor with 2,000 slot machines, 15 poker tables and 30 table games..."
