Competition sinks SunCruz

MADEIRA BEACH, Florida – As reported by the Tampa Bay Online: "Citing competition from Seminole Indian casinos and the parimutuel industry, the company that owns the gambling cruise ship SunCruz Casinos has announced the vessel will no longer sail from the port at John's Pass Village.

"The ship, described as the Tampa Bay area's largest casino cruise operation, made its last venture into the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. Roughly 150 employees are out of work as a result.

"'It is with great regret that we will discontinue our service here,' Greg Karan, executive vice president of Oceans Casino Cruises, said in a statement released Tuesday. The company owns SunCruz Casinos and operates gambling ships in Key Largo, Jacksonville, Port Canaveral and Myrtle Beach.

"…Anyone who prepaid for a SunCruz Casinos excursion from Madeira Beach will be refunded, said Gary Inks, the company's vice president of sales and marketing. And any group that planned on taking a shuttle bus to Madeira Beach for an excursion is invited to take advantage of the company's flagship in Port Canaveral, he said. The company will pay the difference in transportation costs, he said…"
