Competing Slot Plans Divide Maryland10 December 2003MARYLAND – As reported by the Washington Post: "Just about every corner of Maryland is being pitched as a perfect place for gambling. "There are proposals to put slot machines at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, slots at bars and taverns, slots at the State Fair, slots on the Eastern Shore and in Western Maryland, not to mention full-blown casinos at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and National Harbor in Prince George's County. "But with one month to go before the General Assembly convenes for its annual legislative session, lawmakers are nowhere close to agreeing on a single plan. Although there is broad support among legislators for expanded gambling, many say they are more divided than ever about the details and wonder whether a consensus is possible. "…A House of Delegates committee has been studying gambling for six months but isn't likely to clear up the issue soon. The Ways and Means Committee announced yesterday that it would produce a final report on gambling next week, but members said they are splintered on the subject and a long way from being ready to pass legislation. "…Some lawmakers describe the situation as 'gambling gridlock.' Exemplifying the problem, several delegates on the committee said they are increasingly sold on the idea of casinos, despite opposition from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) and some top legislators. "…Ehrlich made slots a centerpiece of his campaign for governor last year, but he has shown a reluctance to take a leading role since the House killed his plan this year to allow slots at four racetracks…" |
