Committee Looks to Protect Mississippi Casinos

BILOXI, Mississippi – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "Coast casinos could eventually be nestled inside floating concrete barges or balanced on top of pilings. Those are two ideas pitched Tuesday to an ad hoc committee looking into ways to protect the gambling industry from storms.

"Casino officials said it could take years to reopen resorts if a major hurricane struck.

"…One way to protect casinos is an idea borrowed from the offshore drilling industry -- floating concrete barges. Wayne Fillingame, a general manager with Stolt Offshore Inc. in New Orleans, suggested the concrete barges, which have been used by oil companies for decades.

"…A more permanent solution could be putting gambling barges above the water, out of the range of any storm surge…"
