Commissioner: West Virginia Locals Ought to Decide on Table Games

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Intelligencer: "Hancock County residents, not state lawmakers, should decide if table gambling is allowed at Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort, Hancock County Commissioner Dan Greathouse believes.

"That's why the commissioner and about 100 concerned citizens are scheduled to travel to Charleston Tuesday to rally at the state Capitol. Following the rally, the group will present local lawmakers with petitions containing 3,000 signatures calling for a local option referendum on table gambling in the county.

"…The people traveling to Charleston will include employees of Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort in Chester, laid off Weirton Steel employees, local elected officials and others. Greathouse said they are expected to arrive in Charleston about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"… What Greathouse and others are trying to persuade legislators to do is approve through legislation the right for citizens of Hancock County to vote, in a local option referendum, on whether to allow table gambling in their county. He said that such legislation should include the counties in the state where the three other racetracks are located - Ohio, Kanawha and Jefferson…"
