Commission Chairwoman: Give Rural Areas Chance at Licenses

JOHNSTON, Iowa – As reported by the Sioux City Journal: "The chairwoman of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said Thursday that struggling rural areas should be first in line for the next wave of riverboat casino licenses.

"Diane Hamilton was among four commission members who previewed what they'll be looking for in applications from several Iowa counties seeking riverboat licenses. Applicants include Worth, Franklin and Black Hawk counties.

"…Commission members formally approved rules Thursday that lift a previous moratorium on new licenses and set the stage for another round of gambling expansion. Voters in seven counties already have given a green light to casinos. Washington County joined the riverboat ranks this week.

"Washington County is the latest largely rural county to pin its economic development hopes to a new casino and related amenities. Worth County, with a population of just more than 7,800 people, is also seeking a license, along with Franklin and Palo Alto counties…"
