Column: Norm! Venetian Owner Pursuing Casino Plans in Britain, Reports Say6 August 2003LAS VEGAS -- Sheldon Adelson, owner of The Venetian, is pursuing plans with soccer team owners for casinos in Britain, according to published reports in London and Glasgow. Reports out of Britain and Scotland have Sheldon Adelson considering a joint venture with the owners of two soccer teams. Adelson, owner of The Venetian, has interest in putting casinos in clubs if British gaming laws are liberalized, according to The Mirror in London and the Glasgow Daily Record. The Daily Record said the venture would allow Adelson to "set up shop at top football grounds such as Ibrox and Parkhead." A spokesman for Adelson said Tuesday that Adelson had no interest in having an ownership position in the professional soccer clubs. "That's never been discussed. He has no interest in buying a soccer team," the spokesman said. The joint venture has been in the works "but nothing's been finalized," the spokesman said. Horsing around The secret's out of the barn: Two female reporters at KLAS-TV, Channel 8, have been seeing a lot of the country-western group Trick Pony. Best friends Lisa Johnson and Casey Roebuck met Ira Dean and Keith Burns in May when they were in Las Vegas for the Academy of Country Music Awards show at the Mandalay Bay. Since then, Johnson and Dean have been hanging out, and Roebuck and Burns have been spotted on dates. Asked to confirm, Johnson said, "We're big Trick Pony fans." Johnson and Dean were sighted last month taking in Wayne Newton at the Stardust. Newton introduced them and dedicated a song. The word around the Channel 8 newsroom is that Trick Pony came to town to get five awards and walked off with two trophies. The Scene and Heard Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was involved in an incident Friday at the Luxor's Ra nightclub when a fight erupted between a man and a woman, according to a police report. The woman was hit, and Mayweather tried to keep her from speaking to security guards, the report said. The woman's name is redacted from the police report. No arrests were made. ... The producers of "The Real World" have a casting call for women from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Fashion Outlets, 32100 Las Vegas Blvd. South, for a new show called "Starting Over." Producers of the real-life daytime drama are looking for women over 18 who are "looking to make extraordinary changes in their lives" and are willing to locate to Chicago for the show, which airs next month. ... Star Canyon, opened by celebrity southwestern chef Stephan Pyles four years ago, has been shuttered at The Venetian, and his sister Alena's Taqueria Canonita is under new operators. I hear a new seafood restaurant, Aquanox, is going into the Star Canyon space. ... Spies tell me Jerry Seinfeld got a cool $500,000 for his corporate gig last week at the World Shoe Association. Seinfeld went to the Riviera Comedy Club's 10:30 p.m. show in a three-piece suit and, at the urging of headliner Johnny Dark, went on stage and did 15 minutes. ... Las Vegas-based rock band Reqquiem has advanced to the semifinal round of the Hard Rock Cafe's Cabo Wabo Cantina's national band competition, joining 24 bands from across the nation. The winner will open for Sammy Hagar & The Waboritas and special guests at this year's Cabo Wabo Meltdown in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. ... I hear Steve Schirripa of "The Sopranos" has landed a $300,000 advance for a third version of his goomba-themed book. His second one, "The Goombah's Book of Love," hits the bookstands in November. The Discovery Channel has hired him to be host for a crimes-of-the-century series. ... Pop singer Jessica Simpson and her husband, Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees, are appearing at the Palms' Rain nightclub on Saturday night to promote their upcoming releases. ... Sightings Former "Melrose Place" co-stars Josie Bissett and Rob Estes celebrated Estes' 40th birthday at Treasure Island's "Mystere" on Monday.
