Colorado Poker Charges Dropped

COLORADO – As reported by the Colorado Gazette: "Charges against the last three card players cited in a 2005 Palmer Lake gambling raid were dropped Thursday, closing a case that focused statewide attention on the legality of poker games in bars and restaurants.

"The dismissals follow a more tolerant approach to recreational gambling announced by 4th Judicial District Attorney John Newsome, who was in office only a few months before the raid. State officials say the games are illegal, but Newsome said he'll launch an educational campaign about gambling laws instead of ordering a massive crackdown.

"Charges against all 24 Tri-Lakes area residents cited in the April 26 raid at Palmer Lake's Guadala-Jarra's restaurant have been dismissed or deferred in the past six months.

"The last three, who maintained their innocence and were determined to go to trial, aren't letting the issue quietly fade…"
