Colorado Lawmakers Pass Casino Resolution17 March 2004COLORADO – As reported by the Denver Post: "In an effort to protect existing casinos in Colorado, lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a resolution calling for Indian casinos that might be built in Colorado by out-of- state tribes to abide by state rules and regulations. "Rep. Tom Wiens and other supporters of the resolution said they fear that members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma will set up gaming establishments in Central City that will operate under tribal rules instead of the state's, leaving the existing 42 casinos at a competitive disadvantage. "…In January, the two Oklahoma Indian tribes announced they were in discussions to give up their claim on 27 million acres in Colorado in exchange for land in Central City or elsewhere, where they would create a reservation and build a casino and cultural center. "…The resolution, which is symbolic and does not have the force of law, says that Indian casinos, if they locate in Colorado, should pay state taxes on gaming revenues and operate the same hours and under the same rules as existing casinos. The resolution would not apply to two existing Indian casinos in southwestern Colorado…" |
