Colorado Governor Holds Gambling Summit23 February 2005COLORADO – As reported by the Denver Post: "Gov. Bill Owens, a staunch opponent of a proposed Indian casino east of Denver, is holding a Western states summit next month on Indian gambling. "Owens will host the two-day summit at a Denver hotel on March 29-30 as chairman of the Western Governors' Association. "…Since 1988, tribal gambling operations have spread to all Western states except Utah and Hawaii. Last year, Indian gambling raked in $18.5 billion, nearly double the take for Nevada's gambling industry. "One of the top issues on the agenda at the summit is 'off-reservation' casinos, like the proposal by the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma to build a casino near Denver International Airport. "Potential speakers include Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and National Indian Gaming Association chairman Ernie Stevens Jr…" |
