Colorado Casino Proposal Doubled

COLORADO – As reported by the Rocky Mountain News: "A week before Steve Hillard and Gov. Bill Owens square off over an American Indian casino near Denver International Airport, Hillard is doubling the size of his proposal.

"Initially, Hillard was planning a $150 million casino that would employ 5,000 people. But after talking to a number of developers, he's now looking at a $300 million development that also would include a hotel, golf course and high-end retail and would employ 10,000.

"…On Wednesday, Hillard and Owens, a strong opponent of the casino, will appear before a U.S. Senate committee briefing on Indian affairs in Washington, D.C.

"The larger-scale project won't sway the governor's position, said Owens spokesman Dan Hopkins.

"…Hillard's company, which represents the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma, has filed tribal land claims to 27 million acres in Colorado, or 40 percent of the state…"
