Coalition not ready to oppose casino plans19 February 2008MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the Tauton Daily Gazette: "The 18-town coalition studying casino impacts is still not prepared to object to the billion-dollar Mashpee Wampanoag project in Middleboro. "This week, the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts took no action on a request from Acushnet Selectman David Wojnar to oppose the Indian casino and support Gov. Deval Patrick's stand against placing 540 acres of land off Route 44 into trust. "...Task Force Chairman Nancy Yeatts, chairman of the Lakeville selectmen, said she was concerned the group might be exceeding its mission to protect surrounding communities from the impacts of a casino. "The lack of a formal stance comes as the group is preparing to testify before a March 4 hearing of the Department of Indian Affairs on a request by the Mashpee Wampanoag for a casino on what would become reservation land..." |
