Coachella Valley gaming expansion faces vote

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Desert Sun: "The tribal gaming compacts that could expand the Coachella Valley gaming tribes' slot machines by 8,500 and usher in two new casinos must pass a state Senate vote and a state Assembly vote before the deals hammered out with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are considered ratified.

"The Desert Sun polled lawmakers, local and from across the state about the process and where they stand on the issue.

"Here's what readers need to know about what's next for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Morongo Band of Mission Indians compacts.

"The Senate vote has not yet been set, and no one will speculate on how soon the legislation will be before the Assembly.

"Lawmakers have been asked to ratify amendments to 1999 Indian gaming compacts that would pave the way for some of the mightiest tribes in the nation to add an additional 22,500 slot machines to their casino floors through 2030.

"…Right now, the compacts are in the Senate, where supporters are cautiously optimistic because the bills to ratify the state-tribal gambling agreements have all been introduced by Senate Democrats whose party is in the majority…"
