Clubs Cater to Irish Gamblers

IRELAND – As reported by the (Ireland) Sunday Business Post: "Commercial casinos are illegal in this country, but if you fancy a flutter on games ranging from poker to blackjack, you will find no shortage of gambling clubs in cities around the country.

"The clubs style themselves as `members' clubs' and are allowed to operate on the basis that everyone entering the club becomes a member. It is only in this context that traditional casino games can be played and clubs are acknowledged by the state to be operating within the law.

"There are at least seven of these clubs in Dublin and their appeal is undoubtedly growing. The Merrion, a club situated just a hundred yards from Government Buildings, recently hosted a televised world poker championship and drew capacity audiences.

"…Of the several private members' clubs already operating in Dublin, those which cater mainly to the Asian community are normally built around blackjack tables, while those aimed at Irish members tend to concentrate on poker…"
