Club Closure Worries Casino Company

5 September 2000

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – Sept. 2, 2000 –as reported by The Associated Press: “Widespread drug use in racy nightclubs, like the now-closed C2K at The Venetian, has at least one casino company more concerned about its reputation than any risk of losing a lucrative gambling license.

”…The Venetian shut down the C2K club Wednesday after constant complaints involving safety and security issues. Much of those concerns came to a climax July 20, when a 21-year-old Henderson woman overdosed on the popular club drug Ecstasy after celebrating a friend's birthday at C2K.

In a legal document sent to C2K operators, The Venetian said there were reports of five people overdosing on a `date rape’ drug at the nightclub on July 1.

”…When crowds partake in racy acts, such as the `Nymphomaniac Ball’ at Club Utopia in January 1999, pot smoking or Ecstasy use, prosecutors have often found it difficult to shut them down.

"…`You would be naive to think young people don't do drugs before they go out to clubs,’ said Steve DuCharme, chairman of the Gaming Control Board and a former police officer. `But it comes down to (whether or not) the operator turns a blind eye to rampant drug trafficking.’…”
