Cleveland Mayor-Elect a Casino Skeptic

CLEVELAND, Ohio – As reported by the Cleveland Plains-Dealer: "Mayor Jane Campbell is an unabashed booster of casinos, but Mayor-elect Frank Jackson is likely to be a grudging skeptic if gambling forces ask him to join a casino campaign next year.

"Talks are percolating statewide to bring a casino package to the November 2006 ballot. Proposals under discussion would change the Ohio Constitution to allow casinos at the state's seven racetracks and its biggest cities, including Cleveland and Cincinnati.

"Jackson says he's not opposed to casinos, but any proposal will have to guarantee jobs for Clevelanders and leverage economic development beyond the casino walls.

"…Casinos suck money from a local economy, Jackson said. If casinos open here, he said, city tax on casino revenues should go into a fund for economic development, not the city's daily operating budget. That way, the city is less dependent on casino profits, Jackson said…"
