City Will Look at Bad Effects of Gambling

COQUITLAM, CANADA -- As reported by the Tricities: "Coquitlam council voted Monday to host a forum on the ill effects of gambling, almost three years after the Great Canadian Casino opened its doors.

In that time, the moral and social implications of the city being home to a busy casino have been a cloud over council, even as it has voted to spend the $16 million it has received as its cut of the revenues from the United Boulevard hot spot.

"...The city will pay for the forum, which was proposed by SHARE Family Services with the goal "to investigate ways of identifying and minimizing negative social impacts of gaming and slot machines."

"Council urged SHARE to invite representatives of police, School District 43, local community groups and the cities that have casinos - Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster and Burnaby - to participate..."
