City votes to end casino contract agreement5 December 2008LAKE WORTH, Florida -- As reported by the Palm Beach Post: "More than two years after the city inked an agreement with a private company to tear down and rebuild the historic beachfront casino building, city commissioners have changed course. "Commissioners voted 4-1 tonight to terminate the city's contracts with the Greater Bay Group to lease and rebuild the 1922 casino, a deal that met strong opposition from some residents and spawned two lawsuits. "...Commissioners set a special meeting for 6 p.m. Wednesday to hear results of a structural survey of the beachfront buildings by Straticon Construction Services and to discuss financing options for restoring or rebuilding the casino. "Before voting to sever ties with Greater Bay, commissioners noted that the project has been stalled by lawsuits and claimed that Greater Bay breached its agreement with the city by not completing work on the pool, which staffers said cost an additional $40,000 because of unfinished work that the city had to complete. City Attorney Larry Karns also cited a missed zoning approval deadline as grounds for ending the contracts..." |
