City opposes Seminole tribal casino5 April 2007FLORIDA – As reported by the South Florida Sun Sentinel: "The City of Coconut Creek has formally opposed the Seminole Tribe's push to gain sovereignty over 44 acres surrounding its casino there -- land being eyed for the state's largest gambling-hotel complex. "City officials said they had no choice but to file an objection with the federal government Wednesday. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs didn't give them enough time to work out potential concerns with the Seminoles over such a massive development, according to the federal filing submitted by the city. "…The Seminoles have developed plans to transform the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek into a destination resort with a 24-story, 1,500-room hotel; a 160,000-square-foot casino; a 2,500-seat concert venue; and 150,000 square feet of shops, restaurants and offices. The hotel would have three-times as many rooms as the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino near Hollywood. The complex's nine-story parking garage would be five stories higher than the next tallest building in the city. "… For the Seminoles, a hotel-entertainment complex in Coconut Creek could translate into billions of dollars in revenue. The Seminoles project nongaming revenue the first year alone -- with 1,000 hotel rooms open -- to be $112.2 million, according to records the tribe submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
