City Fights Casino on Tax Changes

ELGIN, Illinois – As reported by the Chicago Daily Herald: "Elgin leaders will fight an attempt by the Grand Victoria Casino to pay them considerably less in property taxes than they do now, officials said on Monday.

"If the casino gets its way, it could mean Elgin would collect $600,000 less a year from the riverboat than anticipated, said City Manager David Dorgan, who called that 'significant' at a time when the city's budget is barely balanced.

"…The Elgin City Council on Wednesday night will consider passing a resolution to oppose the casino's effort to have the assessed value of its buildings lowered, meaning it would pay less in property taxes to the city and other governmental bodies each year…"
