Citizens Oppose Iowa Casino Plans18 August 2004DAVENPORT, Iowa – As reported by the Quad-City Times: "The designation of a small plot of land in a redevelopment plan for Davenport's riverfront that would allow hotel construction was enough Tuesday to cause a majority of the city Plan and Zoning Commission to table the River Vision plan indefinitely. "Tabling the plan, a proposed $100 million makeover of the riverfront area roughly between the Government and Crescent bridges, came after several citizens said a new hotel, parking and casino complex being sought by Rhythm City riverboat casino owner Isle of Capri has no place on the city's waterfront. "…Jim Hoepner, who is involved in preservation of the city's creeks and the Mississippi River, urged the panel not to let Isle of Capri officials' desires drive decisions on how the riverfront is used. In the past, other gaming firms have promised the city riverfront improvements that never came to pass. "…Before they acted, City Administrator Craig Malin told commissioners their vote on the River Vision plan should be kept separate from issues involving the gaming complex since that will require a separate City Council vote…" |
